Metro Ethernet can support a range of next-generation applications, including Ethernet business services, residential triple play and wireless backhaul. By acting as a single converged transport layer for all of these, Metro Ethernet allows Service Providers to simplify their network infrastructures, just as Hyperconnectivity threatens to swamp them in complexity. Equipment vendors are challenged with how to add this carrier-grade functionality to Metro Ethernet equipment without losing the cost-effectiveness and simplicity that make it attractive in the first place.
