Overview:

The insider threat is one of the most serious and least preventable challenges in the field of information security. This is especially true for major corporations, because such organizations store greater quantities of valuable information, use massive information networks that are highly complex and geographically dispersed and must allow a large number of authorized users access to their infrastructure and data. The current state of knowledge on insider threats is ambiguous at best, because much of the research on insider threats relies on vague surveys, anecdotal case studies, abstract models and speculation. Despite these inadequacies, the insider threat is no different from any other threat, and attacks by insiders have the same elements of any other criminal attack - motives, means and opportunity.
