Overview:

The massive worldwide economic crisis has disrupted the ecosystem of the mobile handset value chain. OEMs (e.g. Nokia and Motorola) are now launching rounds of layoffs, restructuring and refocusing on core competencies instead of boasting their latest acquisitions, expansions and record-high shipments. On the other hand, both Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) providers (e.g. Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) and Flextronics) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODM5) (e.g. Compal Communications Inc. (CCI) and Arima Communications) have seen their shipments drop, revenues decline, and margins erode. As these companies try to survive the challenging market conditions and navigate the changing supply chain dynamics, iSuppli Corp. believes that many established beliefs about the mobile handset outsourcing industry should be re-examined post haste.
