Overview:

Although anti-spam measures are improving, the spam volume is increasing due to the use of Botnets. Botnets facilitate an efficient generation and guaranteed delivery of large volumes of spam. Spambots, or spam-generating bots, use different transmission methods based on the network settings of the infected host. These methods include relaying, proxying, and direct delivery. This paper illustrates these methods and discusses what measures can be taken against them to address the spamming botnet threat. These measures are divided by the place they can be adopted at; the edge routers and the mail servers.
