Overview:

The abuse of chat services by automated programs, known as chat bots, poses a serious threat to Internet users. Chat bots target popular chat networks to distribute spam and malware. This paper, first conducts a series of measurements on a large commercial chat network. It measurements capture a total of 14 different types of chat bots ranging from simple to advance. Moreover, it observed that human behavior is more complex than bot behavior. The abuse of chat services by automated programs, known as chat bots, poses a serious threat to on-line users. Chat bots have been found on a number of chat systems, including commercial chat networks, such as AOL, Yahoo! and MSN. The different types of chat bots use different triggering mechanisms and text obfuscation techniques.
